It is believed that blues derived a lot of elements from spirituals, work songs, ballads, chants, shouts, and field hollers done by African-Americans. It started appearing more prominently after the ending of slavery in the US – most of the early propagators of blues were slaves, former slaves, or descendants of slaves. This music genre was largely popularized by the African-American population in the South.
The origins of this genre can be traced back to the 1860s.
Blues is one of the oldest musical genres that originated in the US.
